High performance is a relatively new addition to my habit list, and it has impactful on how I approach both my personal and professional life. In fact it over arches all the other habits.

It’s important to clarify that high performance doesn’t mean operating at maximum capacity all the time—high shouldn’t be confused with max. Instead, it’s about maintaining consistent, quality output with purpose and intent.

High performance is about doing things with purpose. It’s not just about ticking tasks off a list or doing things for the sake of it. Whether you’re pursuing a goal, building a new habit, or working through your daily routine, having a clear sense of purpose behind each action is key.

Ask yourself: Why am I doing this? What standard am I holding myself to? These questions ensure that your actions are meaningful and aligned with your values.

This mindset of working with intent becomes a commitment—a principle you live by. It’s not just about how you perform at work, but how you approach all aspects of life, whether that’s relationships, health, or personal development. You set a standard for yourself, and that standard becomes part of your identity.

There are several key principles to high performance that I’ve found crucial. Consistency is one of them—sustained effort over time is far more effective than short bursts of intensity. It’s also about focusing on quality over quantity. Doing fewer things, but doing them really well, is the hallmark of high performance.

Time, along with energy management plays a significant role. Prioritising high-impact tasks and managing your time effectively ensures that your efforts are directed where they matter most AND where your energy lies.

I always say, what’s the point in having time when you have no energy.

Continuous learning is another essential principle—staying open to new ideas, improving your skills, and reflecting on your progress are all part of maintaining high performance.

Finally, physical and mental well-being is the foundation. Prioritising health, sleep, nutrition, and recovery ensures that you have the energy and focus to perform at your best consistently. Without looking after yourself, maintaining high performance becomes unsustainable.

In the end, high performance is not about working harder, it’s about working to a standard that represents your values. By approaching everything with purpose and maintaining high standards, you’ll see both personal and professional growth.
