New habits don’t come easy, they take work, and building a strategy will support success.

Here are some considerations

Start Small Begin with small, manageable changes. For instance, if you want to start exercising, begin with just five minutes a day. This makes the habit less daunting and more achievable. BJ Fogg’s approach focuses on tiny actions that can be easily integrated into your daily routine.

Be Consistent & Track Consistency is key. Perform the habit at the same time and place every day to create a routine. This reinforces the habit loop of cue-routine-reward, as highlighted by Charles Duhigg.

Use Triggers and Cues Link your new habit to an existing habit or a specific event (e.g., after brushing your teeth, meditate for two minutes). This makes it easier to remember and execute. Plan when and where you will perform the habit using implementation intentions

Reward Yourself Engaging key neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin is crucial for reinforcing new habits. Reward yourself immediately after completing the habit to create a positive association. Celebrate small wins to enhance this effect further.

Make It Easy Reduce friction by making the habit as easy as possible to start. Lay out your workout clothes the night before or have healthy snacks readily available. Design your environment to make the desired habit the path of least resistance, following James Clear’s Law of Least Effort.

Stay Accountable Share your goals with an accountability buddy who can support and encourage you. Joining a community with similar goals provides social pressure and support, helping to maintain your commitment.

Focus on the Why Understanding why you want to build the habit provides motivation during challenging times. Ensure the habit aligns with your values and long-term goals to increase the likelihood of maintaining it.

Be Patient and Persistent Building a new habit takes time. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks; persistence is key. Embrace challenges and view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.

Reflect and Adjust Periodically reflect on your progress and make adjustments as needed. This helps overcome obstacles and refine your approach. Be willing to adapt your strategies if something isn’t working. Flexibility helps you find what works best for you.

Developing a process will support success, nothing worthwhile is ever easy, so be tenacious
