đ Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat – Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory đ
Many people are familiar with the first part of this quote from Sun Tzu but forget the second half. One canât successfully be delivered without the other. It’s part of the strategy canvas, they are a complement to each other. While this is a military quote itâs so relevant to business!
In fact, the book Art of War, from which this quote originates, could teach you a lot about business strategy!
See itâs not just good enough to build an amazing vision. That has to be related back to a strategy canvas, that is building your model. If you compare it to the military, the strategy canvas was a physical thing. It laid on a table with pieces on it like a chessboard.
The business strategy canvas should also be a physical thing. Just like you read here about building the strategy framework.
â Make it something that is tangibleÂ
â¤ď¸So that people can feel it and relate to it
Once that is completed then itâs all about building the tactics to achieve. Will you get the tactics 100% right in the beginning? No… but thatâs not the point
â The point is to get it started and then work on continually improving them
And you do that through feedback
Just like the military, you can only plan for so much, you canât predict the future!
â HOWEVER, what you can do is cover a lot of ground
That is, preempt a lot of âWhat can go Wrongâ
And then adapt
đĄ This is executing your strategy canvas with military precision
And donât confuse precision with being rigid. The whole foundation of it is based on the ability to adapt and adapt QUICKLY! The framework MUST be flexible and adaptable to change, as things change and can change QUICKLY.
Building your strategy canvas is like putting the pieces of a jigsaw together, ensuring each element fits in with others. Every element should COMPLIMENT each other not CONTRADICT. Thatâs exactly why Strategy and Tactics must COMPLIMENT each other
You need BOTH!
